Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates, the largest of the UAE's seven emirates. The city lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. It has an estimated population of 1.8 million. The discovery and commercial production of the rich oil fields of Abu Dhabi emirate revolutionized the political and economic position of the town.

The UAE covers 83,600 square kilometers and is located on the Arabian Gulf. It shares land borders with Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. The seven emirates vary greatly in size. It represents 85 percent of the land, and the smallest emirate is Ajman. This has led to the growth of industry, construction, commerce, free trade zones, transportation, tourism, farming, fisheries, and communications. The rapid development of these sectors has reduced the nation's dependence on oil. The gross domestic product was estimated at 45,590 million, 70 percent from the non-oil sector. The national currency name is called the Emirian Dirham. The UAE is the third largest exporter of crude oil and gas in the Gulf. It is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
