The City of Chicago is situated on territory that has historically served as a gathering place for Native Americans. The region is the ancestral home of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Tribes, also known as the Anishinaabe or Council of the Three Fires. Numerous other tribes, such as the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo, and Mascouten, view this region as their ancestral homeland. The City expresses its gratitude to the Kitihawa of the Potawatomi for helping to develop the neighbourhood that is now Chicago. We recognise all Native peoples who were here before us and who still have something to offer our city. Our goal is to advance Native cultural traditions.
Chicago is renowned for its cultural offerings with more than 60 museums and a dedicated Museum Campus, home to The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. Don't miss the Art Institute of Chicago, containing 300,000 works in its permanent collection, and Museum of Science and Industry, the largest in the Western Hemisphere.
As the only U.S. city with five regional Tony Award-winning theaters – Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare, Lookingglass, Victory Gardens and Steppenwolf – Chicago’s theater scene takes center stage. You can catch shows at more than 200 venues in addition to performances from esteemed companies such as Joffrey Ballet, Lyric Opera and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
